THE REALITY IN BUSOGA REGION.
VOLUNTEER Proverbs 31:8-9In the Busoga region of eastern Uganda, life is simple but for many, it is also very hard. The land is rich, the people are kind, and the culture is full of life. Yet behind this beauty, there is deep poverty that quietly affects almost every family. In villages across Iganga, Luuka, Mayuge, and Kamuli, people work hard just to survive. Many families depend on small gardens that can barely feed them. When the harvest fails, children go to bed hungry. Some walk long distances to fetch water, and others stay home from school because there is no money for books, uniforms, or even soap. For girls, the struggle is even heavier. Every month, thousands of young girls face their periods with no access to sanitary pads. Many use rags or old clothes. Some use nothing at all. And when the bleeding starts, they miss school not because they want to, but because they have no choice. Over time, missing just a few days every month means falling behind. It means giving up dreams and opportunities. In places like Luuka, this is the quiet reality. It’s not because people are lazy or careless it’s because life has given them so little. The truth is, many families can barely afford food. A pack of pads feels like a luxury they will never reach. This is why SheBloom was created to bring dignity and hope to girls who are silently suffering. We believe that no girl should ever feel ashamed of her period. Every girl deserves to stay in school, to learn, to grow, and to dream. The poverty in Busoga is real. But so is the strength of its people. And together, with compassion and small acts of kindness, we can help every girl in Busoga bloom with confidence, dignity, and hope.
The Reality Girls Face
- Most girls don't understand what menstruation is or how to manage it safely.
- Many cannot afford or access sanitary pads, leaving them to use unsafe alternatives.
- Cultural taboos and stigma make girls feel embarassed or afraid during their periods.
- Girls often stay home during their periods due to lack of proper care, missing social or community activties.
- Using unhygenic materials leading to infections and long-term health problems.
- Lack of support and guidance making girls feel alone and powerless during a natural process.
